The Air League Educational Trust is offering flying scholarships to be flown in the spring and summer of 2007. The awards are for 12-15 hours flying instruction.
Air Cadets are eligible for a number of special awards. Selection will be based on a formal application and, after short-listing, either an interview at the Trust’s London office or on aptitude tests and interview at RAF Cranwell around Easter 2007. The competition is open to young people permanently resident in the UK who will have reached their 17th but not their 26th birthday on 1 April 2007.
Flying Scholarships: Normal ALET flying scholarships offer 12-15 hours of flying training towards the award of a National Private Pilot's Licence (NPPL). Air Cadets are eligible for a number of special awards: The Prince Philip Flying Scholarship (details below) and the Joe Whether Flying Scholarship - both for a full NPPL. All scholarships are funded by industry, by private individuals or by income from endowed funds; some 50 awards are offered each year. Selection is based on a formal application, and, after short-listing, either an interview at the Trust's office in London or on aptitude tests and interview at the Officers and Aircrew Selection Centre, RAF Cranwell. Applicants must be over 17 but under 26 on 1 April in the year the scholarship is flown. Forms available around September with closing date 1 January each year. (Check the Air League website).

The Prince Philip Flying Scholarship: The Prince Philip Flying Scholarship was established to celebrate His Royal Highness’s 50 years as Patron of The Air League. The scholarship provides funding to achieve a National Private Pilot’s Licence. The scholarship is awarded each year to the flying scholar from the previous year that is judged to have made the most progress in their flying, is an exceptional Air Cadet and who has achieved a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

Flying Bursaries: Flying bursaries offer 5-8 hours of advanced flying training in single-engine piston aeroplanes, to assist licensed pilots gain additional flying qualifications or renew a rating. There are no age limits but most bursaries go to applicants under 30. Applications from January and closing date April each year . (Check the Air League website).
Gliding Scholarships: Gliding scholarships offer the opportunity for solo glider pilots or Air Cadets who have reached Gold Wings standard to broaden their flying experience. Depending on experience, the following awards are available at civilian gliding schools: Aerobatic Scholarships of 5 x 4,000ft aerotows with instruction; Cross Country Scholarships of 2 cross country flights; and, SLMG NPPL Scholarships providing motor gliding training, which, depending on the student’s progress, could lead to the award of the SLMG NPPL. Applicants must be British nationals aged at least 16 but less than 26 years in April in the year of application. Application forms available in January for closing date around April. Balloon PPL Scholarship; This scholarship is for a Private Pilot's Licence (Balloons) course with training being co-ordinated by Brian Jones, who circumnavigated the earth with Bertrand Piccard in the Breitling Orbiter 3. Applicants must be over 17 but under 26 at the end of April in the year of application. Application forms available January for closing date around April. (Check the Air League website).

 Flying Instructor Bursaries are available to be awarded for each of the following ratings, as long as there are enough individual applications:

Multi-Engine Instructor (up to £3,000)
 Several PPL scholarships and a few FI(R) scholarships are usually available and advertised in January each year. Other awards may become available from time to time. Applications are required for most of the Guild's flying awards by mid April annually.

The Guild scholarships provide a unique opportunity for people who would like to become pilots or to further their qualifications as pilots.

 The Guild also offers an annual Bursary for a student on the City University MSc Course in Air Transport Management.

The aim of the Scholarships programme is to assist the successful individual, who might otherwise not have the necessary resources, to achieve their Licence or Rating. The costs refundable by the Scholarships are restricted to direct training and examination costs. The costs of obtaining the required Medical Certificate, and any associated travel, subsistence, and accommodation expenses are the responsibility of the Scholarship winners.
